Allied Telesis Launches Single-Mode Fiber NICs Solution for Long Distances
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 9, 2010 – Allied Telesis, a global provider of secure IP/Ethernet switching solutions and an industry leader in the deployment of converged multi-play networks, has enhanced its best-selling network interface card (NIC), incorporating single-mode fiber to allow for cable distances of up to 12.4 miles on connected Fast Ethernet and 6.2 miles through Gigabit Ethernet.
The cards are compatible with any type of peripheral component supporting both Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) and Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) bus standards. There are four new long-distance cards and they feature both Square Connectors (SC) for Fast Ethernet and Logical Connection (LC) for Gigabit Ethernet.
A common concern is Gigabit Ethernet over multi-mode fiber does not transmit effectively over great distances and multi-mode fiber installed for Ethernet only delivered distances of up to 1.2 miles. Installing single-mode fiber allows transmissions to reach distances of up to 12.4 miles with Fast Ethernet and up to 6.2 miles with Gigabit speeds. Thanks to the improved security of fiber, this is already being used by customers in defense and government sectors.
“Allied Telesis is delighted our enhanced NIC cards no longer force companies to choose between speed and distance,” said Nick Parades, Allied Telesis product manager.“Data security is always top-of-mind for companies with confidential information. This new line of NIC cards offers best-in-class security, connecting cables up to 6.2 miles while retaining Gigabit speeds.”
The AT-2701LX20/SC is a PCI bus-based NIC providing Fast Ethernet up to 12.4 miles using single-mode fiber and a fiber SC connection. The AT-2712LX20/SC, which also features data encryption, delivers the same through a PCIe fitting.
The AT2916LX10/LC is a PCI bus-based NIC featuring Gigabit Ethernet up to 6.2 miles using a single fiber LC connection. The AT-2972LX10/LC provides the same features through a PCIe connection.
The cards are available in federal, Trade Act Compliant versions, and come with both full- and low-profile brackets, reducing lead times for the channel by making it simple to stock.
All of the new NIC models are available now across North America.
